Exercising Your Puppy
A puppy under one year of age should not have any forced activity.
The puppy should be allowed to regulate its own exercise
requirements. The puppy knows what it is capable of and will not
overdo the exercise unless we ask him/her. A puppy will overexert
itself to please its owner, so careful not to ask too much from your
puppy. Asking a large breed puppy, to do to much in terms of
exercise could be very detrimental to there growth, there joints, and
especially to there hips. Things that you should not permit your puppy
to do would be such activites as jogging with the owner (especially on
the road), long walks, and jumping. The puppy should not be
permitted or asked to jump up on anything (i.e. into a utilty vehicle) or
over anything until it is at least one year of age. Roadwork should not
be permitted with your puppy until he is at least one year of age as
well. The pavement is very unforgiving on young bones, joints, and
hips. It is in your best interest, and in the interest of the health and
longevity of your dog to exclude these activites from your puppy's life
until he/she is a year old. When the puppy is a year old you may build
the puppy up slowly to do these activities, such as jogging or running,
your dog will love it. The activity must be routine and not just a 10-
mile hike without a break every 6 months. The dog must be in
condition for the activity. One other important mention is be very
aware that he/she has a cool, shady spot and plenty of water in the
summer. The dogs' appetite will noticeable decrease and its activity
leavel will decrease in the summer as well.
